  • Is This Residential Right for You?

This residential is ideal for young people aged 16–25 who are looking for an exciting and memorable way to complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Residential section.

You might enjoy this residential if you:

✔ Like adventure and outdoor activities

✔ Want to try airsoft missions and tactical challenges

✔ Enjoy working as part of a team

✔ Want to meet new people from across the UK

✔ Are interested in military, emergency service or leadership environments

✔ Want a residential that is active, social and different from a typical classroom-style course

No previous airsoft experience is required. Our instructors will teach you everything you need to know during the week.

  • Don’t Worry If You’re Coming Alone — Most People Do

It’s completely normal to attend the residential on your own – in fact, 95% of participants arrive without knowing anyone else.

There’s also very little time to feel awkward or left out. The group quickly gets started working together to plan the menu and organise food shopping for the week, which naturally helps everyone start talking and getting to know each other.

Before long, the first event of the week begins — the Escape & Evasion exercise — where participants immediately start working together as a team. This shared challenge is a great icebreaker and friendships tend to form very quickly.

Throughout the week you’ll be training, planning missions and taking part in activities together, so there is always something going on and plenty of opportunities to get to know the rest of the group.

By the end of the residential it’s very common for participants to leave with new friends from across the UK, shared memories and a real sense of achievement from completing the experience together.

If you are travelling independently, we can also meet participants at Norwich Train Station and provide transport to the site, helping make the journey simple and stress-free.

Over 95% of participant attend on their own

“My son was on this course and had the best week! I really recommend it, he had loads of fun, made good friends, learned a bit about himself and came back more independent - thank you, Georgie and Mark, for an amazing experience.”

“A Brilliant week of fun and activities to bring young people together and develop critical life skills. Hugely recommended! My son had a fabulous time. Thank you! 🤩"

"The Scorpion Airsoft Residential is honestly amazing. I met so many people, all of whom I got on with very well. Mark and Georgie are very friendly and funny, and the airsoft games we play are always engaging and interesting, with a sort of “current times” twist. I would highly recommend this residential to anyone who is doing DofE gold."

"Came into it really nervous about having to live with strangers, especially 11 boys and only 1 other girl, but the experience was amazing and made some amazing new friends, plus I learnt not to put olive oil on chips!!"

FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help.

  • What is Airsoft?

Airsoft is a team-based sport where players eliminate opponents with Realistic Imitation Firearms (airsoft guns) that fire 6mm Plastic balls called BBs. It is similar to Paintball but without the mess!

Player's battle in our WW2 RAF Hospital and Bunker complex, with realistic military simulation scenarios. For those new to the sport, our team are here to help you every step of the way and will guide you through your first Airsoft experience.

  • Does Airsoft Hurt?

Yes, Airsoft can hurt. The amount of pain you may feel will depend on a lot of factors, such as your pain tolerance, distance, clothing, and adrenaline levels.

Airsoft BBs can leave welts and bruises, depending on the range you are hit from and clothing worn.

  • Can you accommodate young people with SEND?

Yes, absolutely. Our team has extensive experience supporting young people with additional needs, and we regularly welcome participants with Autism, ADHD and other SEND requirements on our residentials.

We aim to provide a supportive environment and can offer a range of adjustments where needed, such as quiet spaces, additional guidance during activities, flexible participation, and extra support from staff.

If your young person has specific needs, we are very happy to discuss how we can support them. Please feel free to call or email us before or after booking — we’re here to help.

  • Can I attend with people I know?

Following a Review of the residential section by the DofE in 2024, it is now acceptable to know up to 50% of participants on a residential, however, this is not a target.

If you wish to attend with 1 or 2 friends or people you know, then this will be acceptable.

We will split participants into different subgroups during Airsoft activities to allow for better mixing with new people and for all participants to experience an element of shared and purposeful activity with people they don’t know.

The aims of the Residential are to inspire participants through a concentrated involvement with people they don’t know, usually from different backgrounds, and bring alternative views to the challenges they will face.

  • Do I have to be completing my DofE Award to attend?

Our residentials are open to anyone aged 16 to 25 years old looking for an exciting week.

  • I am driving to the course, is there space to leave my car for the duration of the course?

Yes, there is car parking available. Independence 16 Ltd T/A Scorpion Airsoft cannot be held responsible for any loss or damages.

  • Do I need to be fit to attend?

A basic level of fitness is helpful as the week is active, but you do not need to be particularly fit to take part. All activities are challenge by choice and can be adapted to suit different abilities.

We have welcomed participants with a wide range of fitness levels, from those who have never exercised before to participants with asthma, amputations and other medical conditions.

The Battle PT session on Day 2 is a short 20-minute introduction to military-style PT and is fully scalable. The log run that follows is a teamwork exercise — the team that stays together succeeds, and no one is left behind.

  • Can I bring my own Airsoft equipment?

Yes, you can bring your own equipment, however, independence16 Ltd T/A Scorpion Airsoft cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage. All Replica Imitation Firearms RIF'S will be tested to ensure they conform to site regulations.
